August 13th, 1961: At the beginning of their journey, the passengers on the interzonal train from
Munich to East Berlin have no idea that this day will change their lives completely. The closer
the train gets to the inner-German border, the more an unbelievable announcement becomes a
certainty: Today, the GDR government implements its long denied plan, builds a wall in Berlin
and closes the border to the Federal Republic. The travelers from the GDR have to make a
decision for their future lives within the shortest possible time - namely within 3 1/2 hours, which
the train still needs to reach the border. Will the convinced communist Marlis (Susanne
Bormann) and her husband Gerd (Jan Krauter), disappointed by the socialist regime, separate
and tear their children apart? Will singer Carla (Alina-Bianca Neumann), who is at the beginning
of her career, and her band trade their incipient success in the East for the fragile mix of
freedom and uncertainty in the West? Will the elderly couple Melchior (Birgit Berthold and Harry
Täschner) give up hope and the chance to see their son living in Garmisch again? Will Edith
Salzmann (Luisa-Céline Gaffron), one of the first female train drivers in the GDR, drive the train
across the border to its destination station?
