Leonhard, who has remained mentally at the level of a big child, lives with his cows on a remote
alpine pasture and dreams of a woman for life. Only his cousin Anton Gruber and his wife
Franziska Gruber take care of him. Not only out of pure charity, but also because of the alp,
where a spring with valuable healing water bubbles up, could be a saving financial goldmine for
the couple. But Leonhard refuses to sell; after all, he has made a solemn promise to his
deceased mother to take care of the alpine pasture. When young Beate, who is spending her
summer vacation with her parents at the Grubers' guesthouse, suddenly appears in the middle
of the night on a horse at the alpine pasture, the two are quickly smitten. Their happy love life is
crowned with an offspring - not to the enthusiasm of the worried parents Hanna and Christian
Spengler. The big question of whether the couple can take responsibility for a child at all
becomes a stress test for the fresh relationship. As if that were not enough, the Grubers -
together with the mayor Gregor Obermaier - try to use the situation for their own purposes.
