Journalist Johanna (Odine Johne) returns to the Faroe Islands. The 38-year-old wants to sell the house of her deceased parents and finally come to terms with the trauma of her childhood: the loss of her father, who died at sea under mysterious circumstances years ago.
While Johanna is dealing with her personal affairs, a conflict escalates over the hunting of migrating pilot whales—a practice banned in most parts of the world. When Johanna discovers the body of a young French animal-rights activist on a rocky cliff, she begins to investigate. A spear lodged in his back casts suspicion on the “Grindlers,” the local whale hunters led by Jacobsen (David Ganly) and Brandur (Patrick O’Kane).
Police officer Bjøern (Jan Krauter), a childhood friend of Johanna’s, is reluctant to stir up trouble. Although the journalist promises him to stay out of the matter, she is determined to uncover what is clearly being covered up, with the help of activist Harms (Henning Baum) and his ship’s crew.
The deeper Johanna delves into the case, the clearer it becomes: the truth is inextricably linked to her own past and long-suppressed memories.
